Although I was hoping to have moved on I can't really seem to let go of Manuel Castells triology on the Information Age. Especially the subject of identity and when put into context regarding webculture, globalization and societies at large it becomes really interesting. The power over identity is no longer as fixed or concentrated in institutions, organizations or symbolic controllers as it once was. It is much more diffused and decentralized nowadays as technology provides the possibility to exchange cultural codes/information and interact without interference from a centralized agency. The role of the State, corporate media, capitalist firms and religious institutions that make up the old means of power over cultural codes are in an interconnected global society (like the Web) no longer as influential in structuring communal behaviour. Politics, traditional media and religion are not necessarily on the decline, quite the contrary but their roles are definitely being restructured. For all lot of people this is probably somewhat uncomforting (more individual participatory responsibility) but also very liberating. There is great disruption on all levels of society (especially Western) and Castells is brilliant in commenting on these shifts. His insight and research provides great perspective on these matters. But really, after I'm done with this I'm going to read only comic books for the rest of the summer. 2008-may-28 @ 12:02 pm Permalink Tags: identity , sociology, manuel castells, books
'Eric Elms'
Kind of feeling obliged to myself to post this Eric 'Adorn' Elms BRKW interview from his recent exhibition @ Colette in Paris. Really into his stuff and probably one of the artists/designers I've enjoyed the most following over the years, together with Evan Hecox and Futura. Can't remember but the early tee designs he did for Supreme was probably what got me hooked. Be warned: all the 'likes' gets quite annoying after awhile. Still, dude's NY streetscene for sure!
Not really sure how and when I got stuck in this disco voodoo-swamp but it's all I've been listening to lately. I'm suspecting this malady to be over soon but it's been rather pleasant. Sort of like an itch, a good one which mean I'm more than happy to pass along the experience. Sharing some viral vibe; muxtapin' - discostyle.
Additional May pickups:
'Ruling' - Osborne 'Love Come Down' - Evelyn King 'Got A Match' - Theo Parrish
Wtf is up with this? I can't decide if I find this disruptive or just really annoying. Artschool really messed me up about the cruciality of execution and detailing so I'm definitely sensitive to these things. Well, atleast on certain days. This is such a day since I was supposed to sit down and enjoy my last cup of coffeebuzz for quite awhile. And I'm definitely Jan Chipchasing here but the experience of getting ready to get my drink on and discovering the cheapness of having it served in a papercup mushed down into papercup number two, evoked a sensation of being offered fluid leftovers from a neighbouring table. It kind of made me wonder the point in even caring with branded flashy logotypes and expensive leather chairs if you can't even offer customers a decent experience of your supposedly premium product.
Luckily Mr. Nesta, as always brings musical remedy:
'One Cup of Coffee' - Bob Marley & The Wailers (1962) 'My Cup' - Bob Marley & The Wailers (1974)
The new Justice video which I find close to genial is not as much a musicvideo as it is a social commentary. The music becomes almost secondary. Bears a few similarities to Chris Cunninghams work for Aphex Twins but without the surrealism. Reading the YouTube commentaries on 'Stress' is way interesting.
You'd wish the French government could in some way recognize and stimulate the positive and cultural potential locked down beneath all this extreme frustration. Although some expressions might not be typically 'French' there's really great creativity flourishing amongst youths in France.
*During the years living in Paris while attending Parsons I was hanging out at Les Halles nearly every weekend to check out dancers like these from all over the city. Pure positivity - until the police came to chase us away...
