There's been a steady increase of fixies around town lately and this weekend I headed downtown for an
event organized by some of the cities coreriders. Snooped around a bit, played the role of the inquisitive outsider which in subcultural circles is usually met with suspiscion but everyone was more than happy to share stories. I noticed that there is a great mélange of participators and a healthy degree of personal expression within the fixed gear culture. The sense of individual contribution seemed far greater than the crave for tribal membership. What won me over was exactly that; individuality, the main ingredient to make any culture thrive and progress. The growing number of fixed gear riders is definitely a force with substantial value; eco conscious, 'open sourced' and a willingness to evolve. Rumour also has it that Stussy is working on a fixiemodel together with a wellknown Italian manufacturer.

This is where I get anal about things. How small a promotional 'campaign' might seem, make sure you do a proper job nonetheless, because there will surely be people out there taking notice of even the smallest details. This marker sent to various streetwear/item distributors probably work as good as any for doodlework but we all know Adidas doesn't produce filterpens so why disguise a freebie as your own product? Atleast that is the message you will be sending. Alternatively just throw in a few certified
quality items instead and, if necessary tag it as an 'Adidas freebie'? Instead of covering up, flaunt your savvy (that is, if you have any). Building branding credibility, presumably in this case through cultural affiliation should be made with a deeper understanding for coretargeted undertones. Whatever the intention could be with this handout it surely takes the form of a Friday afternoon call to the nearest printing studio.

Kevin Lyons has done some great works for Stussy, Huf, aNYthing and others over the years and there's always a twist to his designs. I found this Natural Born tee buried way down in a drawer and although I had almost forgot about it, it's actually one of my favorite prints. A simple solution with substance so profound that it can create friends (or enemies) in an instant. A lot of feeling and it's impossible not to take a stand when wearing this print. Social commentaries on t-shirts nowadays have sort of lost its edge but this one can not be mistaken. The reference is spot on;
George L. Jackson:
'We must accept the eventuality of bringing the U.S.A to its knees; accept the closing off of critical sections of the city with barbed wire, armored pig carriers crisscrossing the streets, soldiers everywhere, tommy guns pointed at stomach level, smoke curling black against the daylight sky, the smell of cordite, house-to-house searches, doors being kicked in, the commonness of death.'
